Q & A

What is Dutch Microfund?

Dutch Micro Fund is a fund that invests in developing countries with the primary purpose of providing an attractive return that goes hand in hand with the fight against poverty.

The fund is open to both private and institutional investors. The fund is tradable every month.

Microfinance: what is it and how does it work?

Like entrepreneurs here, local entrepreneurs there need to invest in order to keep their business going, however it is scarcely possible on an average income of one euro per day and nothing to put down as security. But if they get a financial injection– which is what microfinancing does - they have plenty of opportunities to expand their business.
Microfinance is the general term covering financial services offering very modest amounts to poor people in developing countries.

How is the share price determined?

The share price is set in Euros and is calculated once every month based on the valuation of the investments in the fund. The share price calculated as at the last day of the previous month is published on the website (www.dutchmicrofund.nl) on the 10th business day of the month. When shares are bought or sold, the trading price is increased or decreased by 1% on the basis of the share price. This percentage goes toward the fund.

What is the investment policy?

Dutch Microfund works together with a number of selected partners to realize its investment strategy. All these partners have their networks in the countries concerned and a proven track record. Through these partners our investments are distributed both as loans and as venture capital to microfinance institutions. These institutions in turn lend this money to the people who need it. Because a reasonable interest rate is charged and repayment rates are very good, investors in Dutch Micro Fund can earn an attractive return as well.

One of the fund’s strategic objectives is to spread the risks as much as possible over continents, countries, currencies and sectors. The fund aims for socially responsible investment avoiding every possible involvement with drugs, weapons, child labour or severe environmental pollution.

It is the explicit objective of Dutch Microfund to achieve a reasonable return for our investors based on levels of return that are locally acceptable.

What is the return?

The return targeted by Dutch Microfund is between 7% and 9%. This return is achieved in part through the interest payments on the loans that, working through our partners, are extended to microfinance institutions (MFI). In addition, the fund holds venture capital participations in such institutions. Given the fast development of MFIs, in general these organizations pay little or no dividend, but the value of our holdings goes up. This value growth will be distributed when that growth in value is realised by selling the participation.

The value of your investment may fluctuate. Results obtained in the past are no guarantee of the future.

Investors are advised to consult their own financial advisers to determine whether investment in the fund is suitable for them.

What is Dutch Microfund’s dividend policy?

Dutch Micro Fund NV will pay the profit available for distribution in the form of a stock dividend to the shareholders. The dividend will be paid twice a year, in the months of January and July. When the fund is first set up, Dutch Micro Fund NV is not expected to pay a dividend. The first dividend is expected to be made in January 2010.

Who is on the board of the fund?
